The TikTok Effect

This research, done for my master degree thesis, examines the complex relationship between TikTok’s beloved short-form video content and the phenomenon of overtourism in popular destinations worldwide, investigating how viral digital content produces tangible effects on physical locations. The research question developed, How can viral short-video content posted and shared on TikTok contribute to the rise in overtourism in travel destinations? can be found at the intersection of the two core topics of tourism and TikTok. The thesis was structured on five chapters, namely Causes and Context, Tourism, TikTok and tourism, Travel Tiktok: an aesthetic analysis and Survey.
